This unsigned, undated, uninscribed drawing remained with Colin McCahon until 5 years before his death in 1987. It was one of many similar drawings of hills and valleys drawn by McChaon during the mid-1940s when he lived and worked at various jobs in the Nelson-Motueka region. These drawings, of roughly the same dimensions, formed a distinct group within a sizeable and varied collection of mainly working drawings and watercolours kept in his studio.
