Barbara Blakemore Fowler (1921 - 2004) was a member of the Canterbury Society of Arts for nearly forty years, which is now known as the Centre of Contemporary Art (COCA), Christchurch. During her artistic career she remained mostly in the Canterbury region, regularly participating in group exhibitions and also held two solo shows of her work. She enjoyed experimentation with colour and creating idyllic settings, painting imaginative landscapes in beautiful vivid colours and even her most imaginative works contained a human reference. Barbara Blakemore Fowler gave much thought on the best way to express what she wished to convey through painting, and endeavoured to keep a consistency in her work. Inspiration came from Dunedin artist France Hodgkins (1869 - 1947). Contemporary British painters Paul Nash (1889 - 1946) and John Piper (1903 - 1992) also strongly influenced her artistic career.
