"Mr Charles F. Goldie, son of Mr David Goldie, of this city, and a former pupil of Mr C.J. Steele [sic], the well-known artist appears to be making his mark in Paris. At Julian's, one of the big private studios, he carried off the medal and prize of 75 francs with a study of a mans torso, from life, in oils, life size, in the concour for the united studios consisting of 300 students. Mr Goldie commenced to draw 'from life' only last year, and he defeated several artists who had won medals and other prizes in previous years. He was also placed second for his 'esquisse,' with the subject being 'Jacob Wrestling With the Angel,' with which the professors were exceedingly pleased, one of them remarked that the head was the finest piece of painting of 'the head' that he had seen which is saying a good deal. Mr Goldie's studies will now be placed on the walls and remain there as long as Julian's exists as an academy."

"It is always pleasant to record the successes of Auckland boys abroad. Mr C.F. Goldie, who has been for the last three years fitting himself for an artists career in Paris, has we learn been awarded the first and only prize given for drawing from life, in the December 'Concour,' for the united studios of Julian in Paris. More than 300 students from all parts of the world competed, so that Mr Goldie is to be complimented upon taking the first position, more especially as his work will now be hung in the studio with that of the prize winners for the last ten or fifteen years, many of whom are now celebrated artists."
