The Mirror Lakes are located next to the highway vfrom Te Anau to Milford Sound just before the entrance to the Hollyford Valley. Aubrey's trip to Milford Sound would have been treacherous and would have taken several days to reach from Te Anau. Aubrey was an itinerant artist who made the journey to Milford Sound in 1885, stopping and sketching various vantage points along the way. He eventually set up camp on the shores of Milford Sound. Works from this journey are held in the collection of Alexander Turnbull Library.

Records show Aubrey returned to Milford Sound in 1905.
