Louis Auguste de Sainson was the official artist aboard Dumont D'Urville's L'Astrolabe, during the ship's three month voyage around New Zealand in 1827. Thirty-two plates after de Sainson were published in 1835 in the Atlas which accompanied the official report of the voyage. These are framed plates from this publication.

Missionary Settlement, Bay of Islands - Hand coloured A view from a hill to the south of Paihia, looking north along the beach line, with the houses and gardens of the Church Missionary Society station, home of the Rev. Henry Williams and his family. The artist visited and sketched the site in March 1827.

Whangarei Heads - Black and white Titled by the artist Vue Du Cap Wangari Nouvelle Zelande, the view features a Maori canoe ( Waka ) entering Whangarei Harbour circa 1833.
