The Opera Guild recognised the need for a different style of fundraising. In 2004, with the support of artist Terry Stringer, Diva/Avid was commissioned. Opera lovers took the opportunity to purchase the sculpture. It spoke not only of their love of opera but their support for the New Zealand Opera. The project raised over $70,000.
Terry Stringer is a leading New Zealand sculptor. He trained at Elam School of Fine Arts. He graduated with Honors in 1967 and in the following years received virtually every significant scholarship and award available to New Zealand artists. In the late 1970s he was awarded the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council Scholarship three times. In 2003 Stringer was the recipient of the country's national honour, the ONZM (Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit).
