This historic watercolour features a rare view of Mt Ngongotaha in the distance. It was most likely painted from one of the Ngati Whakaue settlements near central Rotorua. Auckland based Payton arrived at the Rotorua lake district two days after the 1886 Tarawera eruption. He chose this area as subject matter for his paintings over the next twenty years.
