Auckland born Patterson settled in Spain in 1960, teaching both art and music at the American School of Barcelona for the next twenty five years. His association with Auckland and the nearby beach of Pakiri is evident in his work, with paraphernalia collected from beaches often incorporated in his mixed media work. He returned to New Zealand several times, the first in 1989, then later in the early nineties where he exhibited with his Auckland dealer Warwick Henderson. Patterson painted a significant series of cubist window studies in 1959 and 1960, several of which were included in a major exhibition at the Auckland City Gallery in 1960. Curated by Director, Peter Tomory, the exhibition included fellow artists Colin McCahon, Toss Woollaston, Rita Angus and Dame Louise Henderson. A work titled Window in Spring was purchased by Auckland Art Gallery. His work is also in the collections of Hocken Library, Rotorua Museum of Art & History and Aigantighe Gallery.
