An almost identical view by J B C Hoyte is in the collection of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki. This work was exhibited in 1958 at the Auckland City Art Gallery in an exhibition titled 'A Colonial View, Paintings of Early New Zealand'. The following is an extract from the catalogue:

In the evening we went on Tarawera Lake in a canoe; it is the prettiest lake of any we have seen, and the rocks and shrubs remind one of Killarney. It is connected with Roto-mahana by a small river which however was tabooed. Lots of duck found their way into Tarawera at which we had several shots, but bagged only one.
