British troops used the Waitara River as an accessway to the surrounding region. In 1860, a dispute over the purchase of west Waitara known as the Pekapeka Block led to the first of the Taranaki wars. The military camp, established on what is now known as Pukekohe domain, became the centre of operations in the Waitara region during the Maori wars.
