John Gerrard Keulemans 1842-1912 was on of the most sought after bird artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A prolific work-oriented illustrator, he produced quantities of excellent bird plates for books and journals of the period. Although he worked from specimens he was best known for drawings that were anatomically correct.

Keulemans was one of several artists who contributed to Lord Thomas Lilford's 'Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Islands' (1885-1897). This seven volume work contained 421 colour plates, representing late 19th-century chromolithography at its best.
