Geoff Thornley remains a painter's painter. He is undoubtedly New Zealand's most eminent minimalist abstract artist, dedicating the past thirty years to exploring the play of light and shade on large canvases that are sometimes over-whelming in there complexity of subtle texture and finesse of painterly astringent, quality.
His work is not for the faint-hearted, but those who approach his paintings openly they will discover a slow-burning fuse of aesthetic pleasure and delight probably unmatched by many other contemporary New Zealand artists. Thornley's work is collected by the Public Galleries of New Zealand and many prominent art foundation trusts, including Fletchers, Jenny Gibbs and the Wallace Collection.
