International Art Centre Leads the Market for Women Artists with Outstanding Auction Results
Women in Art held 27 May, drew a strong and enthusiastic response from collectors both in the room and online. A full auction room and competitive bidding across multiple platforms confirmed the growing recognition of historical and contemporary women artists in the New Zealand Art Market. Highlighting the strength of the evening, Lot 24 - Ann Robinson's luminous 'Side Carved Flax Pod, Steel Blue' - soared to $42,446, exceeding expectations and reinforcing Robinson's reputation as one of New Zealand's most accomplished glass artists. A similarly outstanding result, Lot 15 - a rare and atmospheric work by Flora Scales, 'Untitled [Mousehole, Cornwall, c.1950-54]' - achieved $33,957 setting a new artist auction record.
One of the evening's most celebrated results came with Lot 28 - Kushana Bush's intricate and exquisitely detailed 'Sleepers with Lobsters', from her All Things to All Men series (2012), which achieved $39,414, setting a new artist auction record. Jacqueline Fahey's 'A Funny Thing Happened on K'Rd, 1984', Lot 34, realised $43,650. International Art Centre now holds the top three auction results to date for this acclaimed artist.
Contemporary Māori artist Robyn Kahukiwa also drew spirited bidding with Lot 60, 'Wāhine with Three Feathers', realising $16,978 and confirming her powerful resonance with new and established collectors alike.
Strong interest in early and mid-century women artists drove several results to more than double or triple their pre-sale estimates together with a 79% clearance rate under hammer, reflecting a shift in market appreciation and institutional focus toward these significant contributors to New Zealand's visual culture.
