The tiny Fantail or Piwakawaka, native only to New Zealand, is one of our best-known and most beloved birds. With its distinctive fanned-tail and cheerful song, these small insect-catchers often flit and dance within a metre of people and are far from shy. They may be found in a wide variety of habitats from native forests to suburban back-yards and from sea-level to the snow-line. Under cold temperatures a flock of fantails will huddle together to stay warm. During warm weather they forage from the understorey to the canopy, and can often be found associating with flocks of other forest species, such as Silvereyes and Saddlebacks. Sometimes known as the 'gardeners' companion' these small creatures adorn and delight.
