Friday's Child is an excitingly contemporary portrait with a sense of the timeless. The head and shoulders painting of a young, green eyed girl wearing black lace, is traditional in concept and composition, and anything but, in the artists lose, textured brushstrokes. Middlebrook's deft application of oil on panel is painterly and brilliant. If such a thing as a 'new' old master work exists, this is it.
