About Ian Hamlin

Born 1960 Ian Hamlin's first solo exhibition took place at age 18 in Greymouth. Since 1978 he has exhibited consistently and extensively throughout New Zealand. A respect and commitment to ecology and the landscape is reflected in his work. Although predominantly an oil painter Hamlin also works in pastel and watercolour.

An elected Artist Member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts Hamlin currently serves on the Academy Council. From 1989 until 1993 he tutored at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts School in Wellington and now continues to teach privately.

Living at various times in Wellington and the Marlborough Sounds Hamlin has spent time painting overseas with considerable distinction and has held exhibitions in Australia and the United Kingdom. He exhibited at the 1990 International Art Fair, Barbican Centre in London.

This meticulous artist has a rare talent of being able to combine an exquisite use of light with brilliant and subtle colours.
