ARCHIBALD FRANK NICOLL O.B.E. ( 1886 - 1952 )
Archibald Nicoll was a leading New Zealand portrait & landscape painter. He was born in Lincoln, Canterbury and studied under Sydney Lough Thompson (1877-1973) in Christchurch at the Canterbury School of Art. He was appointed as a teacher at the Elam School of Art in 1908 after which he left for Brittany in 1910. He returned in 1914 and joined the NZ Expeditionary Force.
After the war he moved to Wellington and later returned to Christchurch where he was appointed the Director of the Canterbury School of Art. His works were included in the Centennial Exhibition in Wellington in 1940 and all major New Zealand galleries display his work. He died in Christchurch 1952.
