Interstate is a continuation of my earlier works concerned with the quality of bright outside light entering the soft darkness at the edge of small pockets of native forest. This painting looks out into the blue dawn light, from a few metres inside a precious stand of Nikau [our only uniquely native palm], just north of Paraparaumu on the Kapiti coast.

A few metres outside the forest canopy, over the fence, cars and trucks hurtle past on State Highway 1. With the slipstream of trucks the palm fronds ruffle and swish like feathers in the wind, gently absorbing and dispersing the energy of momentum passing.

This is a transition place at the edge. Human straight lines and the speed of haste, versus the slow deep meanderings of natural chaos. Just before dawn, when if you're up early enough, you can watch the world unfolding and opening for the day. This is about watching our world go by, from the natural world's point of view.
