About Nugent Welch

Nugent Welch was one of New Zealand's first war artists, capturing predominantly post-battle aftermath. Born in Akaroa, Welch held a keen interest in the beauty of nature and capturing this in art. His work as a full-time artist was interrupted by World War I where he spent two continuous years battling in the trenches, as well as serving in the Passchendaele offensive. In 1918 Welch responded to the demand for artists and was appointed title of Divisional Artist. Here he was given the task of pictorially recording New Zealand depots, hospitals, camps, and special appliances used. These pieces were produced in mainly soft-toned watercolours, capturing the melancholic aftermaths of war. Discharged from the army in 1919, Welch resumed his art career back in New Zealand.
