It is always a pleasure to welcome a work by Palmerston North based artist Phillip Holmes to the gallery. In this fine Italianate portrait of Isabella, Holmes reverts to a subtle palette of soft greys and whites. Elegance of line, long associated with the Florentine school, but rarely seen in contemporary New Zealand art, is a hallmark of his work. Isabella, with her unadorned beauty and downcast gaze, is a timeless and perceptive work of art.
