In 1901 Dorothy Kate Richmond (1861-1935) travelled to Europe for the second time to further her education. In the same year Frances Hodgkins (1869- 1947) travelled to Europe for the first time where she met with Richmond. 'The two women attended art classes with Norman Garstin in Normandy. They became close friends and travelled together not only in England, but also in France, Belgium and Holland before returning to New Zealand in December 1903. p. 22 New Zealand Women Artists, Anne Kirker, Reed Methuen Publishers, 1986 In a letter home, Frances Hodgkins describes Richmond as the dearest woman with the most beautiful face and expression. I am a lucky beggar to have her as a travelling companion.
