2011 - A great 40th Anniversary Year at Auction Wed, 01 Feb 2012

2011 proved to be another successful year for International Art Centre's auction division. Celebrating 40 years in business International Art Centre began the season in March with three significant new auction records. 'Les Deux Amie's' by Louise Henderson fetched $103,000 and Grahame Sydney's 'Summer Night Ida Valley' $91,000. Equally sought after was Marcus King's 'The Arrival' which made $17,400 against its estimate of $12,000 - 16,000. The sale included three McCahon Flower Studies on paper which each sold for between $20,000 and $30,000 each. A Peter Siddell oil 'Lily Pond' achieved $47,450 in the same sale.

April's Contemporary & Collectbale Art auction went well with consistent results throughout the sale, $11,725 for Philip Trustum's 'No. 29' and $9,380 for Mike Petre's 'Field Study'. A group of Jos Kivits paintings made a total of $21,480. Results were consistent and as expected.

July's auction was our most significant offering of the year and one of the best offerings of 2011. Two McCahons were sold including 'View through the Trees' at $124,000 and 'Kauri' for an undisclosed but significantly higher sum. Another extraordinary sale - the second highest of the 2011 season, also sold for an undisclosed amount, was Charles Frederick Goldie's 'Serenity'. Evelyn Page's 'Nude in a Door Way' made $193,300 after competitive bidding and Milan MrKusich's 'Centre With Three Elements' was sold post auction for $62,900. A small but delightful Frances Hodgkins 'The Orange Seller, Tangier' fetched $47,000 as did Peter McIntyre's 'Sheep Droving, Rangitikei', the second highest price for the artist - the record price of $48,000 was achieved at International Art Centre's March 2008 auction. The sale was our best for the year with a total around $1.5 million including auction sales.

August Contemporary and Collectable Art saw our best ever result for this sale category. 186 of the huge 230 lot offering were sold under hammer and a record $20,500 was achieved for Mike Petre 'Field Study 100' with another work by the artist making $10,080. An Adele Younghusband 'Still Life with Trumpets' fetched $8,200 against its $3,000 - 5,000 estimate, a Peter Siddell pastel made $8,900 against $4,500 - 7,000 estimate and a Toss Woollaston estimated at $12,000 - 16,000 flew past reserve making $23,450. A John Walsh oil made $20,500 and Jane Evans Still Life and Seascape went for $12,000.

November's Important Early & Rare auction saw Charles Frederick Goldie's 'Ngaheke, a Chieftainess of the Tutea Taoi Hapu at the Tangi' fetch $217,322. 'Harbour Morning' by Peter Siddell made $23,447 against it's estimate of $12,000 - 16,000 and Michael Smither's 'Red Chair' went for $54,900. A Max Gimblett titled 'Brook of Gold for Maia' made $12,000. John Week's 'Two Nudes' was keenly sought and eventually sold for three times it's reserve at $25,160 - all other John Weeks paintings in the sale fared well too as did two works by Frances Hodgkins. A record $33,170 was paid for Christopher Perkins 'Portrait Of Annette Stiver' and all works from the Estate of Douglas Badcock were sold under hammer.

International Art Centre ended 2011 with a Contemporary & Collectbale Art Auction that was successful on many levels. Jeff Koons 'Balloon Dog' and edition of 2300 went for $8,793 and Sara Hughes 'In the Wild' made $10,500. A suite of Henryk Szydlowski paintings were well contested as were works by Justin Summerton and Matt Gauldie. A rare work by Flora Scales 'A Days Work' went for $7,620 and three works by Vera Cummings, all Maori portraits, fetched consecutive record prices, the highest selling for $14,650. Works by Tom Esplin, Douglas Badcock and Colin Wheeler performed very well as did some of the foreign pictures.

International Art Centre begins it's 41st year in business with an Affordable unreserved offering 19 February, Important, Early & Rare Paintings 29 March and a Contemporary & Collectbale Art Auction late April. Entries are now invited.
