William Francis Drummond Jervois was educated at the Royal Military Academies of Gosport and Woolwich. As a commissioned officer in the Royal Engineers he travelled widely. He was appointed Governor of South Australia and New Zealand. In 1893 Jervois was appointed Colonel- Commandant of the Royal Engineers. Jervois Road and Jervois Wharf, Auckland are both named in his honour.
