In the early 1990s Woollaston often travelled to the United States, staying at the home of former United States ambassador to New Zealand, Anne Martindell. The artist was inspired by this new landscape. Holidaying with Anne gave him ready access to the mountains around Trachus, the Grand Tetons in Wyoming and the Adirondacks north of New York. It was the unique mountains, skies and deserts that provided the inspiration for work produced at this time.
