John Buckley 1942 - 2005 Born in Wellington, Buckley painted from earliest childhood. He recalled schooldays spent in various art rooms learning to draw, paint and channel a vivid imagination. In 1960 the young Buckley moved to Auckland, achieving success over the next twenty years in the world of advertising.

During a visit to the United Sates in 1980 Buckley was approached by an agent wishing to handle his work internationally. The result of this partnership was representation in private collections through out the UK, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia. John Buckley's 1983 solo exhibition at International Art Centre, was a sellout.

Buckley depicted sometimes haunting subject matter with a skillful intensity. Of his distinctive style he said the application technique is very similar to that of the 18th century Dutch School. Colour particles are suspended in a clear medium and numerous glazes applied. The advantage of this, is that light is able to shine though the final thickness of the glazes and reflect back from the white canvas. Consequently more brilliance is achieved, even in shadowed areas.
