The flowering of the artist's garden in Tasman Street, Nelson inspired her first flower paintings in gouache. Jane Evans says in a letter to the vendor: Suddenly there was this feeling of wanting, above all, to express the joy of living. Life was full of colour, and that was what I wanted to put down in my paintings. This work certainly expresses this with the bright reds and yellows of the hollyhocks and reminds me of my father's enjoyment planting these flowers. This work was no. 19 of The Flower Growing series.
