This painting won third prize in the Art Union Competition held after World War I to raise money for war windows. After studying at Dunedin School of Art, O'Keefe joined his father in the family hotel business before going to Paris in 1894. This work is believed to be a scene from the O'Keefe family hotel. It has been held in the same family collection since the 1920s.
