'New Zealand's Rembrandt' for sale by auction Wed, 01 Mar 2006

Among the 200 entries in the 21 March auction, our first for 2006, is Charles Frederick Goldie's 'Portrait of a Burgomaster, after Rembrandt, Royal Gallery, Antwerp' painted in 1895.

The painting featured in the 1997 exhibtion 'Goldie' and features as a full colour plate on page 66 of that publication. It measures 62 x 50 cm and is presented in it's original Goldie frame which are now are trademark of the artist's work.

The pre-sale estimate is $100,000 - 150,000 which represents good value for serious collectors. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire a work from this important period before he became famous for his iconic Maori portraiture.

Goldie lent nine of his European works to the fine art collection at the Industrial and Mining Exhibition, Auckland's major entertainment over the summer of 1898-99. These included the impressive 'Burgomaster' copied in the Royal Gallery at Antwerp in 1895, and two other copies after Rembrandt (Reference: p 12 Goldie by Roger Blackley)
