About Ernest Buckmaster

Born in Victoria in 1897, Buckmaster studied at the National Gallery School in Melbourne, Australia. A prolific and traditional painter of portraits and landscapes, Buckmaster first became popular in the 1920's, a popularity that continues today, especially in Australia.

He was awarded the Archibald Prize in 1932 and in the 1960's came to New Zealand at the request of Sir Henry Kelliher to judge the Kelliher Art Awards.

Ernest Buckmaster died in Melbourne in 1968.
